Since the Navy gave my husband Thursday off as well, we decided to drive up the road to Six Flags Over Georgia. They have a pretty good deal online, and you can get $2 more off at your MWR. We got there when it opened and started going on the roller coasters! They have some different types like Superman that lays you down on your stomach like you are flying. It was definitely a different type of ride. However, we did run into some snags. Those old wooden roller coasters are rough! In the Georgia Screamer, I felt like the whole structure was minutes away from collapsing. One time, I felt a piece of wood hit me in the face. Don't be fooled because they have short lines... we regretted it for a long time after we got off the ride.
We also felt that the roller coasters at Six Flags were shorter than Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. We knew that it wouldn't be as pretty as Busch Gardens (other than DisneyWorld, what can be?) There were a lot of roller coasters though. We didn't even finish all of them. Our favorites were Goliath and the Batman ride. The reviews that mention the bad help were correct. Luckily we really did not have to wait too long for each ride (45 minutes max for two of the rides.) We did have to wait forever to get on the bumper cars. Yes, the bumper cars! There are seatbelt straps, and the rider has to cross them over his or her body. The workers insist on meandering around the track "checking" everyone. They took forever, and they didn't even check ours! If I had been in a crash, oh wait... that's the point. They were drinking their sodas and chatting it up with a friend. The wait was worth it because inevitably people always pile up in one corner and it was my goal to navigate around them. I didn't care if I didn't hit anyone, but I was going around that track!
The rest of the day was very expected. We paid wayy too much for pizza ($7 a slice) and then saw a sign on the drive home for a whole large pizza for the same price. The parking was also overpriced, but since we got there early, we were very close. Also my athletic husband won a Georgia basketball. They don't stock UVA, WVU or even Clemson basketballs. We didn't play whack-a-mole which is my strength because it was so pricey! I do have those quick reflexes required by such a game.
Lessons learned:
Skip the wooden roller coasters at all costs. It is not worth the stomach pain. My husband literally said, "It isn't over yet?!"
Get to the park really early to avoid most lines. Also it helps to go on a weekday. You may even want to go to the bumper cars early to avoid surly workers.
I'd still go on the bumper cars! :)
