Trip to the Georgia Mountains: Part 2 Cabin and Hike

Well after our near death experience, we decided to go to our cabin.  It was just as wonderful as it looked in the website!  It talks about being tastefully decorated with a Harley Davidson theme which frankly sounded like a contradiction to me, but there was very little motorcycle related items throughout the house. (http://www.mountainlaurelcabinrentals.com/)  It was called the "Harley Hollow."  It was $99 a night, and the company gave a military discount of 10% which was nice. The photo is a view from the hot tub on the porch.  The hot tub was much needed after all of that canoeing.

The downside of being in Blue Ridge was trying to find a good restaurant that night.  We drove around for awhile, but since the cabin didn't have wireless internet, I couldn't look anything up on Chowhound.  www.chowhound.com has to be the best place to find information on restaurants.  We ended up eating at the local Mexican restaurant, Monte Alban.  The food was your typical Mexican food: I had fajita steak nachos.  But it wasn't up there with our San Diego Mexican food standards.  (Seriously, San Diego Mexican food will change your life.)  I did like that I could get a half order for $6.00.  However, they did not have any alcohol to drink.  I could have really used a margarita or at least a Corona Light after my venture down river.

The next day, we spent hiking the Appalachian Trail.  We only hiked about three miles, but it was a very steep up and down hill.  Addy surprisingly did better than I did.

I have allusions that I am a great hiker, but that is probably not true.  I blamed it on the fact that I was in such high altitude, and the air was thinner.  Perhaps it could be because I have missed hot yoga for about three weeks... hmm.  The views were absolutely wonderful.  My sweet husband was wonderful although one time I fell behind, I asked him if he was going to wait for me.  It sounded like he said that if he got too far ahead of me that it would be hard to get a divorce.  I think that I might have been hearing things because it was past one pm, and I hadn't had lunch yet.  (Luckily for me, the nice tubers saved our bags of chips that were floating down the river as well.)

On the way back, we stopped at Blairsville, Ga.  It seemed to have many more options than Blue Ridge with regards to restaurants.  We ate at Cook's Country Kitchen.  It was wonderfully rural.  My hot dog was super cheap even with more onions than I knew what to do with.  (Around $3)  It was fitting for the Fourth of July.  I ordered apple pie for dessert.  It was definitely frozen, and they reheated it unevenly.  But you get what you pay for, and this restaurant was worth the small fee.

I decided to make my chicken, veggie, goat cheese, vodka sauce pasta for dinner, so we didn't have to try to find another restaurant in Blue Ridge.

Lessons learned:  Always look up restaurants on chowhound prior to going on our trip.

Don't bet that all Mexican restaurants serve margaritas.

Eat as much Mexican food in San Diego, California as you can because you are not finding it in Blue Ridge, Ga.

Stay in Harley Hollow at every visit to the northern Georgia mountain region.  (It really was that nice... having coffee with that view!)

Prepare for a hike on the AT because it is embarrassing to have a dog out-hike you.

The mountains in Northern Georgia are a great place to visit from Athens.  We didn't go near the interstates around Atlanta.  It took about two hours round trip.
